Thatcham Community Tennis scheme

A Bright Future for Tennis

The Tennis Courts at Brownsfield Road owned by the charity Thatcham Memorial Foundation enter a new chapter in their story. The courts have been used by Thatcham Tennis Club for weekly club nights as well as pay as you play by members of the public but in recent years there use has declined and costs have spiralled.

The Foundation was pleased to welcome the National Tennis Association to the site in Summer 2020 who delivered a programme of coaching sessions for all ages starting with free give it a go mornings. Through this experience the Foundation was invited to join the working party of Newbury Community Tennis. The renamed Newbury & Thatcham Community Tennis scheme now includes Thatcham Tennis Courts from July 1st 2021.

Chairman of Thatcham Memorial Foundation, Nathan Gregory said “the courts are a great facility in the town and a great deal of money is spent on their maintenance; when the Trustees and found out about the proposals for the scheme in Newbury we knew we had to get in on the act! I’m grateful to Thatcham Tennis Club who have been part of the process and their club nights are enshrined in the agreement. I know that with Ed and the NTA team at the helm the courts will get a new lease of life and be used to their full potential.”

The Scheme has also come with £8k investment from the Lawn Tennis Association funding a SmartAccess gate to bring the site up to date. Those wishing to use the courts can do so with a; Club Pass, Annual Pass or under Pay as you Play from as little as £6 per hour per court. Details can be found at newburythatchamtennis.org.uk.
