Celebrating the King’s Coronation

Thatcham Memorial Foundation marked the Kings Coronation by illuminating the Town’s War Memorial; understood to be the first time in over 40 years. The idea came from Trustee and lifelong Thatcham resident Mike Farmer “I can recall the ’53 celebrations as a school boy and later Anvil Firing and lighting up of the memorial for the Silver Jubilee; as we celebrate King Charles we shouldn’t forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice in two World Wars and since that allow us to enjoy today’s freedoms.”

Thatcham Memorial Foundation, a charity serving the town for over 75 years, is solely responsible for funding the ongoing maintenance of the Town War Memorial and planting schemes of its environs. Chairman Nathan Gregory remarked “it was a poignant way to mark the start of the third Carolean age, the thanks should go to those who support our events, notable the fundraising quizzes for the War Memorial otherwise it would not have been possible. Whilst energy efficient LED lighting has been installed Trustees are minded to keep illuminations limited; during the poppy appeal and significant occasions such as next year’s 80th Anniversary of D-Day.” Also installed in time for the Coronation were an Unknown Tommy and a Saluting Servicewomen; the pair were donated by Thatcham Branch of the Royal British Legion and will form a lasting guard of honour at the entrance to the Garden of Remembrance.
