Binny comes to Town

On Saturday, 30th November Foundation Trustees and the neighbourhood police team were joined by Madam Mayor to unveil a new addition to the Queen Elizabeth Playground – a new character. This exciting new feature replaces the old bin, which was sadly destroyed by an act of arson earlier this year.

In the spirit of community involvement, the Thatcham Memorial Foundation partnered with local youth groups including various sections of the scout association and girl guide Uk that meet onsite along with regular hall hirer ‘Steps ahead’ to participate in the fun competition, “Help, I Haven’t Got a Name,” inviting children to come up with the perfect name for the new bin. The competition was a huge success, and the winning name, “Binny the Bear,” was submitted by Jinyu Xu. The second-place entry, “Bin Bear,” came from Isabelle Benn, while Henry Aldridge’s name, “Charlie,” secured third place.

Madam mayor (I was delighted to be asked to pick the winners: and to be here this morning to meet the children and to present the young winners with certificates and a novelty mug filled with sweets).

The Thatcham Memorial Foundation would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the competition. We hope that the new “Binny the Bear” will bring a smile to visitors of the Queen Elizabeth Playground for many years to come, while helping to keep the area clean and welcoming.

Jan cover (we very much hope that by running this competition the young people will respect and value this addition).
